Orthobiologics have opened new doors for the healing of musculoskeletal injuries and orthopaedic conditions. At Kayal Osteoarthritis & Orthobiologics Center, PC, Dr. Robert A. Kayal and his team are continually pioneering high-tech orthobiologic procedures that have the potential to speed fracture healing and optimize rehabilitation.
Orthobiologics for Fracture Healing
Orthobiologics are substances that can help expedite a patient’s return to pre-injury mobility and activity levels. Made from high concentrations of materials found naturally in the body, they facilitate the healing of muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. For restoration, the body requires three orthobiologic substances: matrix, growth factors and stem cells.
- Matrix: The matrix serves as a foundation for new cells to build upon in order to fill in bone gaps.
- Growth factors: These proteins stimulate cell growth, control cell growth and promote healing. In terms of function, growth factors are similar to the many vitamins and minerals your body needs for good health.
- Stem cells: Found at the repair site, these types of cells can develop into other cell types required for bone healing.
When you break a bone, your body is alerted to activate the healing process. When a bone does not break cleanly, a gap or shattered area may occur. Matrix material begins to fill in this gap and provide a location for stem cells to reside. To speed healing, the surgeons at Kayal Osteoarthritis & Orthobiologics Center may use artificial matrix material to fill gaps and encourage cell regeneration at the break. They may also use a non-invasive procedure to introduce growth factors that spur new cell formation. Finally, stem cells (often harvested from bone marrow) may be injected into the site, where they turn into repair cells and promote faster bone regrowth.
