Injured Muscles, Tendons & Ligaments
Pioneering the region’s most advanced musculoskeletal treatments, Dr. Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS is an expert in the use of minimally invasive biologic therapy for many types of orthopaedic injuries. From chronic tendon and ligament pain to acute muscle and soft tissue injury, orthobiologics may be recommended to reduce complication risk and facilitate enhanced healing.
Orthobiologics for Soft Tissue Healing
Orthobiologics are substances that can help expedite a patient’s return to pre-injury mobility and activity levels. Made from high concentrations of materials found naturally in the body, they promote healing of muscles, tendons and ligaments. For restoration, the body requires three orthobiologic substances: matrix, growth factors and stem cells.
- Matrix: The matrix serves as a foundation for new cells to build upon in order to restore damaged tissue.
- Growth factors: These proteins stimulate cell growth, control cell growth and promote healing. In terms of function, growth factors are similar to the many vitamins and minerals your body needs for good health.
- Stem cells: Found at the repair site, these types of cells can develop into other cell types required for muscle, ligament or tendon healing.
When you injure soft tissue or muscle, your body is alerted to activate the healing process. Matrix material begins to fill in this gap and provide a location for stem cells to reside. To speed healing, the surgeons at Kayal Osteoarthritis & Orthobiologics Center may use an artificial matrix material to fill gaps and encourage cell regeneration at the injury site. They may also use a non-invasive procedure to introduce growth factors that spur new cell formation. Finally, stem cells (often harvested from bone marrow) may be injected into the site, where they turn into repair cells and promote faster tissue repair.
