Viscoelastic & Steroid Supplementation
Delivering localized relief for patients who have not responded to physical therapy, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or other first-line treatments, viscoelastic supplementation and steroid injections may be recommended for arthritis, joint pain, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Kayal Osteoarthritis & Orthobiologics Center specializes in these types of non-invasive pain relief, and may recommend other forms of therapy in conjunction with the injections.
Corticosteroid injections are a synthetic form of the steroid your body produces when it is placed under stress. Trusted since the early 1950s to relieve the inflammation and associated pain of sports injuries and musculoskeletal damage, injectable corticosteroids help to minimize inflammation, and therefore reduce pain and restore function. Corticosteroids may be recommended for:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Ligament injuries
- Trigger finger
- Tennis elbow
- Baker’s cyst
- Frozen shoulder
- Rotator cuff injury
- Chondromalacia patella / runner’s knee
- De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Neck tension
- Trigger points
- Low back pain
Viscoelastic supplements, such as Euflexxa®, Hyalgan®, Orthovisc®, Supartz®, and SYNVISC®, are formulated from a substance similar to joint fluid. When injected into the joint, these products helps to lubricate the joints, often restoring mobility and providing relief from pain and swelling. Viscoelastic injections are given in a series over a period of several weeks, depending upon your physician’s recommendation.
Corticosteroid injection and viscoelastic supplementation is considered quite safe. While these therapies are not recommended for every case, Kayal Osteoarthritis & Orthobiologics Center team will evaluate your symptoms and medical history to determine if you are a candidate. In some cases, viscosupplementation allows patients to return to activity or delay surgery.
